Fortress Klis – Silent Witness Of Croatian Tumultuous History

KLIS FORTRESS is located in the place of the same name, near Split. It is the largest fortress in the Dalmatian county.

For two millennia the fortress was the key of Dalmatia and the true altar of the homeland. As a silent witness of Croatian tumultuous history and a symbol of the struggle against the Turks, it is an ideal place for a history and geography class under the open sky. Situated on a steep cliff above Split it offers an unforgettable view of Split, Solin, Kastela and the islands of Brac, Solta, Hvar, Vis… In the oldest part of Klis, at the foot of the fortress, is situated a parish church, a centenary basilica on three hills, of monumental proportions, richly decorated by frescos with biblical and historical motifs from national and Klis history. www.croatia.hr
